Branded Drugs Advertisements, not good!

Ξ June 16th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Articles |

It has been a long time trend of companies of using the television as their primary means of advertisement.. why i have nothing against it but i sure have something to say about advertisments on branded medicines.. I as a pharmacy student have come to the understanding that these branded drugs does not differ from the generic (with of course noted of the same bioequivalence) and it has been a usuall thinking of buying the branded ones becuase it has better effects.. and basing on the situation of our country today.. its the least that we need!

Philippines has one of the most expensive drugs in the world, it is but a good news to hear that our president has signed the bill of cheaper medicines act, in this way the market will be flooded with generic medicines.

Now, going back to advertisements.. come on.. think about it.. where do they get the money to pay these advertisements? of course! from the medicines that you purchase from them, thats what makes it expensive and such of an unreasonable price! they pay for the making of the advertisemnt, the ones in the advertisement and upon showing the advertisment on air, that wuld really cause a fortune! and not only that, these advertisements of the branded drugs causes misinformation and misleading the public into the belief that branded drugs have better potency that the generic drugs, thus brainwashing the public to buy their products which is unreasonably high..

Wake up Filipino’s! we are stabbed upfront! not only by our own Political leaders! but them of the foreginers, such oportunistic parasites.. we have to wake up and stand up against this, but i say NO TO VIOLENCE, YES TO INTELLIGENCE, let us act accordingly by using our intelligence and having straight with our rationale, let us move to ban these advertisements for fair thinking to the public and freedom to choose of what and which to buy..

Do not let these advertisements be your pharmacists, ask the real pharmacists! its better to be a fool once that to be a fool in a lifetime! Ignorance is not an excuse! do not be fooled by scams and misleading ads..

Eating Habits Not Sole Cause of Thinness or Obesity

WEDNESDAY, June 4 (HealthDay News) — Your nerves, rather than your eating habits, may have a more direct role in whether you are fat or thin, according to new research.

A study on worms shows that serotonin levels in the nervous system influence feeding and fat. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter, also acts independently to control eating and what your body does with those calories once they’ve been consumed, the study said.

”It says that the nervous system is a key regulator coordinating all energy-related processes through distinct molecular pathways,” Kaveh Ashrafi, of the University of California, San Francisco, said in a prepared statement. “The nervous system makes a decision about its state leading to effects on behavior, reproduction, growth and metabolism. These outputs are related, but they are not consequences of each other. It’s not that feeding isn’t important, but the neural control of fat is distinct from feeding.”

Ashrafi said that given serotonin’s ancient evolutionary origins, you can apply what’s learned from the worms to humans.

”From a clinical perspective, this may mean you could develop therapeutic strategies to manipulate fat metabolism independently of what you eat,” he said. “Now, the focus is primarily on feeding behavior. As important as that is, it’s only part of the story. If the logic of the system is conserved across species, a strategy that focuses solely on behavior can only go so far. It may be one reason diets fail.”

The findings were published in the June issue of Cell Metabolism.

At its most basic level, fat regulation is the balance between energy intake and expenditure; however, Ashrafi said the physiology is very complicated.

In the worms, serotonin affected feeding by involving nerve receptors not normally required for fat control. The byproducts of the signaling process ended up affecting the control of feeding behavior, Ashrafi said.

In the worms and in mammals, high serotonin levels are associated with fat reduction, while low serotonin levels lead to fat accumulation, the researchers noted. However, in the worms, when serotonin goes up, the worms desire to eat increases even as fat melts away. But in humans, high serotonin leads people to eat less and shed fat.

Serotonin’s effects on fat and eating habits in the worms fit the nerve messenger’s role as a sensory gauge of nutrient availability, the researchers said. When resources are scarce, worms build up their fat reserves and switch metabolic gears to save energy and direct nutrients to fat stores.

Ashrafi said serotonin’s role in balancing energy across species leads him to believe that “human counterparts of feeding-independent fat regulatory genes identified in our study may similarly regulate energy balance.”

kenjay: see, i told you, its not all about lifestyle… GENES…. nerves.. many stands as a factor.. and yes, i believe mine… i should blame the nerves.. ^.^ i got the nerves! arg! hehe., but quite seriously, this is a new discovery that could help all the obese and overweight people of the world get over their insecurities and physical problems!

115-year-old’s brain worked perfectly

By ANRICA DEB, Associated Press Writer Fri Jun 13, 10:26 AM ET

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - A Dutch woman who was the oldest person in the world when she died at age 115 in 2005 appeared sharp right up to the end, joking that pickled herring was the secret to her longevity.

Scientists say that Henrikje van Andel-Schipper’s mind was probably as good as it seemed: a post-mortem analysis of her brain revealed few signs of Alzheimer’s or other diseases commonly associated with a decline in mental ability in old age.

That came as something of a surprise, said Gert Holstege, a professor at Groningen University, whose findings will be published in the August edition of Neurobiology of Aging.

“Everybody was thinking that when you have a brain over 100 years, you have a lot of problems,” he said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Friday.

He cited a common hardening of arteries and the build up of proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease as examples.

“This is the first (extremely old) brain that did not have these problems.”

Van Andel was the oldest living person in the world at the time of her death in 2005 in the Dutch city of Hoogeveen, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

In 1972, the then 82-year-old Van Andel called the University of Groningen in order to donate her body to science. She called again at age 111 because she worried she might no longer be of interest. At that time Holstege began to interview her, testing her cognitive abilities at ages 112 and 113. Though she had problems with her eyesight, she was alert and performing better than the average 60- to 75-year-old.

Dr. Murali Doraiswamy of the Center for Aging at Duke University, not associated with the study, said it is unusual and valuable.

In the first place there are few “super-centenarians” — people 110 and older — alive at any one time, a slim proportion of the world’s population and a scant number even compared to those who reach 100 years.

As a result, he said, there are few chances to study brains as old as hers.

“It’s very rare to be able to do not only a post-mortem, but also be able to have tested her two, three years before she died,” said Doraiswamy.

“For a scientist, getting the opportunity to study someone like that is like winning the lottery.”

Doraiswamy, an Alzheimer’s expert, said that the proportion of brains with some buildup of proteins associated with the disease increases with age. As a result, experts theorize anybody who lives long enough will get them eventually.

When Van Andel died, the director of the elderly home where she was living declined to give a cause of death, pointing to her extremely advanced years.

Holstege said she died of cancer.

“She died from stomach cancer, and you and I can also die from stomach cancer,” he said, adding that her case demonstrates that very old people die of diseases, not simply old age.

“It is very important to treat the elderly as normal people, as if they are 50 or 60.”

He noted that Van Andel was operated on at age 100 for breast cancer and survived 15 more years.

When she was born in 1890, she weighed only 3.5 pounds, and her mother expected her to die in infancy. Van Andel’s husband died in 1959. She had no children.

Longevity was in her genes, as all her siblings lived past 70, and her mother died at the age of 100.

Asked what advice she would give to people who want to live a long time, she once quipped: “Keep breathing.”

kenjay: well, as you can see, the age limit of a person does not only depend on how he/she lived his/her life, there are factors, and yes, lifestyle is one of them, but greater is the genes that is in all of us, these that defines our origin… ^.^ and, yes, the doctor is right.. keep breathin! ^.^

Sabah Island.. The answer to our POVERTY.

Ξ June 14th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Articles |

Sabah Island, which is known to be a part of Indonesia is geographically incorrect, according to studies and historians.. Saba Island originally belongs to Philippines, and was claimed by the Indonesians.. now, as you see here, this island may be of no worth., but NO! this island is rich in Oil.. and yes, that is why the oil price n Indonesia is only 27 pesos! and us? almost 60 pesos.. do you see the difference? sadly because we are a 3rd world country with less less power against other countries.. we cannot claim our land.. our land which is benefited by these people.. sad sad truth that many Filipino’s die from poverty because everything is affected when the Oil hikes! The food, the drinks, the clothes.. everything leads down to the Oil.. I hope the government takes action in claiming back our Saba island.. this may be our last chance against poverty, instead of flooding the market with NFA rice and trying to control or doing something about the situation, this should be one of their project.. claiming back what is ours and benefiting from what is ours.

Ces Drilon’s Dissapearance

Ξ June 14th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Articles |

It has been a shock to me when i heard about the news.. Cess Drilon, the strong willed and intelligent reporter, kidnapped for ransom! As far as I can remember, reporters are totally out of the picture when it comes to kidnapping, they are they eyes and ears of the people, and the voice of those oppressed and those crying out to the government, but why do they do this? are they this desperate? what a shame to see the injustice treatment of these terrorist to our Reporters. This is beyond what I anticipated. Deep in my heart i always offer a prayer for their safety and fast release from their captivity, and of course.. a total end of this terrorism in our country..

Friday the 13th

Ξ June 13th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Articles |

Who ever said that friday the 13th gives misfortunes and accidents? According to the police, the crime rate during this day is lesser and.. it turned out even lucky for our family, as we have been able to close many transactions.. :) The point is, there is no harm in believing in such, because it gives a psychological effect on all of us to be extra careful, and the record shows its effectivity but let us not reach to the point of losing our rational side. :)

McDonald’s puts tomtoes back on menu

Ξ June 11th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Information |

OAK BROOK, Ill. – McDonald’s Corp. says it will begin serving sliced tomatoes again after a multistate salmonella outbreak caused the world’s largest restaurant chain to yank the vegetable from its sandwiches.

Spokeswoman Danya Proud said Saturday that the fast food chain’s U.S. restaurants will reintroduce sliced tomatoes in the next seven to 10 days.

McDonald’s was among several restaurant chains and grocery stores that stopped serving sliced tomatoes last Monday as a precaution.

At least 228 illnesses in 23 states were linked to salmonella-tainted tomatoes.

Federal authorities haven’t pinpointed the source of the outbreak, but say parts of Florida and Mexico were supplying most of the nation’s tomatoes when the outbreak began in April.

The heart to help

Ξ June 10th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Articles |

I have always been exposed to the world of helping others, serving others, and being there for others.. this is an environment implanted to me by my parents and my schools before (*UCCP, BROKENSHIRE SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL, upto present UIC) they have thought me to serve.. they have thought me to love to serve.. and still i wonder, how my mind overly rejects it denying the overhead schedules plus extracuriculars plus

community service! but! the heart beats to serve so they say.. and here i am now, full grown and ready to accept challenges laid before me! after all, as i always say to myself.. “God does not give me mountains i cannot climb! and conquer!” atleast when the day comes.. i get to answer the question that bugs us all “have you found the joy in your life?” and.. “have your life brought joy to others?” this is from my favourite movie, The Bucket List. ^.^

So my friends.. let us hold hands and make a better world! change yourself.. change the world.. :D Help others.. help the world!
